Owens made his first GUINNESS PRO12 appearance since September after recovering from injury as the Scarlets ran in four tries and secured a bonus point in the 32-14 victory at Parc y Scarlets.
The win means Scarlets sit in seventh position and with a top-tier European place up for grabs for making the top six, Owens suggested the win was vital if they are to achieve their season's aspirations.
"We're really happy. We know how good Connacht have been this season. They've been a revelation in the league and how well they've done," Owens told the Carmarthen Journal.
"We're pretty happy to come away with bonus point win and there's plenty to work on in the coming weeks but we're happy with getting that result.
"In football terms it was a three pointer but they would have pulled eight points clear of us which would have been disastrous in terms of the league.
"We've closed that gap and we've got a decent run of games at coming up at home."
Scarlets play three of their next four GUINNESS PRO12 games at home, starting on Saturday against Munster, and are undefeated at home since December.
"Our home record in the league over last two season has been pretty good," added Owens.
"It's something we've looked at in this block - we're looking at winning the three home games and taking something from our game against Ulster at Kingspan Stadium."
