28-year-old Daniel Tailliferre Hauman van der Merwe will join Scarlets from fellow Guinness PRO12 club Glasgow Warriors after six years in the Scottish city.
The Canadian international, who featured in Rugby World Cup 2007 and 2011, made his international debut in 2006 scoring two tries. He started all four games in the 2007 World Cup and he scored a try in the 12-12 draw against Japan. He has won 33 international caps and is Glasgow Warrior's leading try scorer.
Van der Merwe was one of three Glasgow try scorers in his side's 22-7 victory over Scarlets at Scotstoun Stadium earlier this year.
Born in South Africa, DTH began playing rugby aged five before progressing to the Boland U16 team. In 2003, the van der Merwe family emigrated from South Africa to Canada (Regina) where DTH attended Dr. Martin Le Boldus High School. He made the Saskatchewan u18, u21 and Rugby Canada Super League Prairie Fire teams. In 2005 Van der Merwe moved to Victoria, where he played for James Bay AA and won three straight BC Championships in'06-'08 and a National Title in 2007.
Following the 2009 Churchill Cup van der Merwe joined Glasgow Warriors on a two-year contract. He would go on to make his debut for the Scottish side as a replacement against Cardiff Blues in October that year. 2010-11 would see van der Merwe go on to become Glasgow's leading try-scorer.
Van Der Merwe was named Man of the Match in Glasgow's round five European Rugby Champions Cup clash against Montpellier having crossed the whitewash on three occasions.
Scarlets Head Coach Wayne Pivac said: "We are delighted to announce that DTH will join us here at Parc y Scarlets ahead of the new season. His record speaks for itself - he's a very aggressive defender, has a natural ability to create and score tries and having a strong finisher in your side is invaluable.
"At 28 years of age DTH will add international experience and maturity to our relative young backline and it will be great to have another experienced voice around to nurture some of our younger guys coming through.
"With experience at centre and on the wing DTH will be an exciting new addition to the squad."
Speaking on the move to West Wales DTH van der Merwe said: "I am extremely grateful to Glasgow Warriors for all that they have done for me since I joined back in 2009. I have had six great seasons at Glasgow but I feel that the time is right for me to face a new challenge.
"I have heard great things about the Scarlets and the facilities at Parc y Scarlets and I'm looking forward to making the move to West Wales. The Scarlets are traditionally known for their exhilarating style of running rugby and have some great backs in the likes of Regan King and Scott Williams and it will be great to link up with former international Stephen Jones who'll be making a return as a backs coach."
