The 30-year-old, who is vice-captain of the Cheetahs, has agreed to a move to Rodney Parade at the end of the Super Rugby season after catching the eye of Lyn Jones in his appearance at Twickenham for the Barbarians.
The move could not come soon enough for the Dragons, who slipped to tenth in the GUINNESS PRO12 table on Sunday after a disappointing loss to Zebre.
And the South-African veteran is relishing the opportunity to develop a different side to his game when he moves to South Wales.
"I know it will be a different type of game up there, especially because of the conditions," he told MyPlayers.co.za.
"I won't be able to play the same kind of attacking game, which I enjoy a lot, but it will help me develop another side to my skills and ability.
"I was overseas before with the Waratahs in Australia, but Europe will be a total different challenge.
"The club liked what they saw when I was with the Barbarians, so I was happy when the deal came my way.
"The GUINNESS PRO12 will be a good challenge for me on and off the field, and an exciting move for my family.
"Fellow Saffas Brok Harris and Ligtoring Landman are at the club, so I also have some good contacts up there when I make my move and I'm sure they will help me settle in."
