The former Dragons and Racing Metro man joined the GUINNESS PRO12 side in December last year, becoming the only the second player, after Sam Warburton, to sign a dual contract with Wales.
Both Lydiate and his club captain Jones are away on international duty with Wales with Ospreys currently lying in fifth in the table.
Jones has represented the region 179 times, scoring 15 tries, and Lydiate says his colleague's attitude and intensity across all aspects of rugby has led to him becoming one of the best forwards in world rugby.
"If we have a drill, say, 50 yards away, he's always the first one there," the 27-year old told Wales Online.
"He doesn't want to be overtaken. When you come in and start off, you think: 'I'll race him there'.
"But he always wants to win that and every time he races over to the first drill and you are thinking to yourself 'It's only the warm-up!'
"But that's the kind of character he is and why he has won so many caps to be fair to him."
Lydiate says that 29-year-old Jones, who has earned 87 Wales caps as well as six for the Lions, maintains that hugely committed attitude at all times.
"He's just relentless," he said. "He just keeps going, even when you think he's blown a gasket.
"It's the same in training. You think 'he's gone now', but he just picks himself off the floor and keeps going. He's just relentless at whatever he does."
