At this rate, he will probably be the first Irish player to finish a PRO12 (Celtic League) out on his own as the competition's top finisher. Irish wings have been there before but always in a joint capacity - Tommy Bowe with Jason Forster of the Newport Gwent Dragons nine years ago, Andrew Trimble with the Scarlets' wing Darren Daniel in 2006-7 and, for good measure, Leinster's Jamie Heaslip.
Gilroy's tally of nine tries in the current GUINNESS PRO12 campaign makes this the most productive of a professional career which he launched at 19 with two tries against Cardiff Blues. Another against the Welsh capital region before Easter keeps him one ahead of Rhys Webb despite the Wales scrum-half adding to his tally during the Ospreys' landslide home win over Zebre.
Last capped by Ireland against Georgia before Christmas, Gilroy faces some formidable challenges from familiar opponents during his native province's four remaining matches of the regular season. After Connacht in Galway on Saturday, Ulster's fate will be determined by successive home matches against Leinster and Munster.
Once they have packed the Kingspan Stadium to its 18,000 limit on both occasions, Ulster travel to Glasgow on the last Saturday of the regular season for what promises to be another massive occasion, against the Warriors. Glasgow are still one step ahead of the pack, deservedly so after joining forces with Leinster in proving that the Six Nations does not have a monopoly on thrilling finishes.
In sharing 68 points equally at the RDS, they earned three points each from the highest-scoring draw in PRO12/Celtic League history, eclipsing the 33-33 stalemate conjured up by the Scarlets and Connacht more than ten years ago.
A recovery which brought Leinster 27 unanswered points meant that the Warriors needed a late try to draw a match which at one stage they were running away with, 20 points clear at 27-7. A corner try from Alloa's Glenn Brice left the leaders requiring a touchline conversion, duly provided by Peter Horne.
No wonder head coach Gregor Townsend spoke of his players' 'outstanding courage.' More of that will doubtless be required over the four remaining matches which stand between them and a home play-off semi-final, starting against Cardiff Blues at Scotstoun on Friday night.
The Warriors left Leinster reflecting on a run of just one win in five matches which leaves them precious little margin for error if they are to have any realistic hope of preserving their record of never failing to make a PRO12 Final. The Dragons at Rodney Parade are next up on Sunday afternoon for a Leinster squad fortified by their continuing success in Europe.
In advancing to the semi-finals of the Champions' Cup at the expense of Bath in the Dublin quarter-final, Matt O'Connor's team did so on the strength of a performance so disciplined that they conceded just three penalties - surely a record for Europe's premier club competition.
Bath conceded four times as many, enough for Ian Madigan's six-out-of-six to ensure the GUINNESS PRO12's presence in the semi-finals, against Toulon at Marseilles on April 19.
Munster's six-try home win over Connacht keeps them on course for a title they last won four years ago. The gap between the ex-champions in third and Ulster in second could hardly be narrower - a points-difference of 149 against the northerners' 151.
In the three-cornered fight for the last qualifying place in next season's Champions' Cup, Edinburgh made significant ground on the Scarlets and Connacht. Scotland's capital team leap-frogged the West Walians as due reward for putting an end to the region's long unbeaten home record which had stood since the Ospreys won at Parc y Scarlets in December 2013.
Connacht are still clinging to sixth place but only by virtue of points-difference. Three of their last four matches will be on home ground in Galway, against Ulster, Leinster and Ospreys. Their one trip is to bottom-table Zebre.
Edinburgh also have three home Guinness PRO12 games to come at BT Murrayfield, against Munster, Zebre and Leinster with the Dragons at Rodney Parade in between. Alan Solomons' men have taken 15 points from their last five matches, five more than Connacht over the same period.
Ireland's western province are free to concentrate on Champions' Cup qualification without distraction after taking Gloucester all the way at Kingsholm in the European Challenge Cup quarter-final.
Two other GUINNESS PRO12 teams, Edinburgh and the Dragons, are step away from their first European final. They clash in the semi at BT Murrayfield on April 17, each having come from behind in the quarters - Edinburgh at London Irish, the Dragons against the Cardiff Blues in a gripping East Wales derby at Rodney Parade.
