Returning Ireland wing Tommy Bowe notched a pair of tries, while Craig Gilroy and Rory Best also went over in triumph, Matt Healy and Tiernan O'Halloran replying to earn the hosts a losing bonus point.
And with the GUINNESS PRO12 title race set to go down to the wire, Doak admitted his delight at the way his team earned a potentially crucial five points.
"Coming to Connacht we knew it was going to be a difficult game and we would have taken a win at the start," the Ulster boss said.
"We played pretty well at times and we are very glad with the outcome, especially given what happened last night with the other top teams picking up bonus points - it was great to pick up our own bonus point in the end.
"You can't have too good a start, so I'm always to pick up a couple of tries early on in the game - to go in at 17 points up was a great credit to our guys.
"We have got some good pace out wide, and if we can get those guys in the one-on-one situations they can do some damage.
"Looking forward to the next couple of homes games (against Leinster and Munster) we want two wins, because that will keep us at the top of the league and there or thereabouts in the semi-finals."
