Connacht sit in sixth with Scarlets one place back on points difference and Edinburgh in eighth, just a single point worse off than those two.
After a slow start to the GUINNESS PRO12 season, with just one win in their opening five games, Alan Solomons' side have turned their campaign around.
Their run to a European Cup final - the first ever to involve a Scottish side - is evidence of that and they will face Gloucester at the Twickenham Stoop next weekend in pursuit of silverware.
However, a trip to Zebre comes first and with Newport Gwent Dragons and Leinster still to come, McInally is focused on the task at hand.
"Next week is going to be a wonderful occasion for the club but it has been spoken a lot about - this is our bread and butter, this is our league and if we can finish in the top six that's what going to get us into the top tier competition next year," he told the Daily Record.
"Our squad has gotten stronger - our attack is evolving, our attack is a lot stronger than it was at the start of the year and we are starting to see the results in our games.
"Scarlets away from home, Connacht away from home - these places that are tough to go to and win we have done them. We were hugely disappointed with how we played against Munster and we need to put that right against Zebre."
