With 70 caps for the club, the former Scotland age grade, and Scotland 7s, cap joined Edinburgh in 2010 and played in the back row until making the decision, in summer 2013, to switch to hooker, emulating the career path of his club-mate Ross Ford.
He made his debut at hooker, off the bench, at Myreside against Ospreys in February 2015 and his first start in that position at the away victory over Treviso in March. McInally then played his first full match at hooker in the next game, the win over Scarlets, during which he took over captaincy from the injured Mike Coman.
Speaking to edinburghrugby.org McInally said: "Obviously everyone's thinking about the final on Friday and, for me, it's nice to know I'm secure here at Edinburgh for another season so I'm looking forward to that."
Due to back row injury, he started on the blindside in the European Cup semi final against Dragons and set the ball rolling in the win with a superb try, continuing at 6 in last week's win.
He said: "It's been good to get some game time at hooker - obviously the injuries we've had in the back row have seen me playing a bit back there, which has been nice.
"I want to be getting as much game time at hooker as possible but club comes first and I've got to do everything I can to move the club forward and if that's playing 6 that's the way it is.
"Going forward I want to be playing as much at hooker as possible and that's my goal going into next year, that's why I've stayed here and Edinburgh's the place for me to do that."
With the European Challenge Cup Final now just two days away, Edinburgh has also been the place where much attention and excitement has been focused this week.
He said: "The Cup run has certainly given us a focus towards the end of the season, which we've not had in a few years and the top six is still achievable as well.
"The boys are in a good place, really excited, we're not putting too much pressure on ourselves and we're just going out to enjoy it."
