But the 46-year-old admits there is still a lot of work to be done ahead this summer if he wants his side to challenge the top-six places next term.
"It has been a challenging season, because maybe we prepared a little hastily. I'm young and I make mistakes," he told La Tribuna di Treviso.
"It was a shame we did not manage to win our last game against the Scarlets, it would have closed out a good month in which we had shown we can be consistent.
"I am comforted by the fact that we have improved as a team. The two victories over Zebre have offset some of the bad luck we had, and I think our decline at the end of the season was because of both physical and mental issues - and also because of some key absences such as [Alessandro] Zanni, [Edoardo] Gori, [Simone] Favaro and others.
"Preparation will start soon, on June 8, for the new season. We want to have a team already in shape for the start of the GUINNESS PRO12.
"I hope this road is the right one, as we want Benetton to be stronger and more competitive."
In the meantime however, Casellato turns his attention to coaching the Emerging Italy side for their summer series in Tbilisi, Georgia.
And having seen some of his squad come through that system to break into international rugby, Casellato is in no doubt the experience is a valuable one for both himself and his players.
He added: "I'm in Georgia along with Victor Jimenez of Zebre. This set-up is good for training both from a sporting and social aspect, and the likes of [Matteo] Zanusso and [Enrico] Bacchin have come out of this team."
