However, the centre bounced back to play 15 games in the GUINNESS PRO12 and was promptly rewarded with a place in Warren Gatland's World Cup training squad.
With Jonathan Davies ruled out of the World Cup due to a knee injury the outside centre spot is up for grabs, though there is stiff competition - not least from Scarlets centre Scott Williams and clubmate Tyler Morgan - while Dixon is primarily a No.12.
But Edwards singled out Dixon's defensive abilities as reason why he could feature heavily in Wales' midfield in the future.
"Jack's defensive work stands out for the Dragons - he is just a very tough lad and that's what you need in international rugby," Edwards told the South Wales Argus.
"He has been leading the Dragons' defence and it was good to see that he has been developing alongside Tyler.
"There's real competition for places (in midfield) and if Jack is working alongside Jamie Roberts and sees how he operates then it's a win-win situation.
"Jamie is a great person to be around as regard learning that leadership role that is so pivotal in the 12 position so Jack should really benefit from the next few months."
