But the 35-year-old, whose charges finished outside the top four the previous year, believes they are well placed to go at least one better this time around.
"Right across the board we have to improve," he told the South Wales Evening Post.
"We can't sit here and say everything is rosy in the garden. It's all right to do it for one season but the challenge is to do it over several seasons and make sure high standards become a way of life in your environment.
"The thing is, too, we didn't actually win anything last year. So we have to kick on again.
"Everyone knows it will be a challenge with so many boys away at certain points of the season, but the other side of the coin is that it will allow young players to enjoy some game time.
"There are people here who are desperate to be on that pitch wearing the jersey and showing what they can do."
