The Warriors head coach announced his decision to supporters at an open training session at Scotstoun this afternoon.
Glasgow Warriors begin the defence of their GUINNESS PRO12 title at home to the Scarlets on Saturday 5 September (kick-off 5.15pm).
Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: "During pre-season we have had a leadership group which includes Peter (Murchie), and also Chris (Fusaro), James (Eddie) and Pat (MacArthur). They have all been outstanding in their efforts during training and have shown real commitment to improving the club.
"We're delighted to be able to announce that Peter will be the designated captain until we have our full squad back after the Rugby World Cup. At that time we'll reflect on how things have gone and also assess the potential leaders returning from international duty.
"Peter is a great role model on how to be a professional rugby player. He works very hard to improve his own game but he's also selfless in helping others reach their potential and we believe he'll thrive as our captain."
Speaking exclusively to glasgowwarriors.org, Peter Murchie said: "It's a huge honour to be asked to captain the side.
"My on-field performance, how I operate in training and around the facility and I how I carry myself is key to me.
"I want to set a good standard, but there are a number of leaders within the squad and I'll be looking for their input.
"I speak quite a lot anyway and I plan to lead from the front and if things need to be said I'll say them, but I'll just try and be positive and lead us forward."
