Wilson has been the man tasked to bring the good times back to BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, having earned many plaudits for his work at Bristol, Scarlets, Newport Gwent Dragons and Wales Under-20s.
He's been given the freedom to assemble his own coaching staff and has just appointed Gethin Jenkins as captain, but Wilson says the Blues' rebuilding project will be more of a marathon than a sprint.
"The aim is to climb the league and with European qualification where it is, the realism at Cardiff is that it's going to take a bit of time," he said.
"We want to get there as quickly as we can but we're not going to run before we walk, so to speak. We need to get the right culture and environment.
"I'm here for a three-year period, and that's the three-year period it's going to take to get us where we need to be.
"The boys are of the same opinion and this year is about making those changes. Our focus is getting the training right, the structure right, and how that affects performances.
"We don't want to put ourselves in league position pressure, it's important we improve on last year but success for us is the right culture and improvements on the field."
Wilson could not have asked for a tougher start in the GUINNESS PRO12, as the Blues play all four Irish provinces away from home in their first five games.
"It would have been nice to have had a couple of home games in there to balance it out, but it may end up being the best time to play them as they'll be affected by the World Cup as much as we are," added Wilson, who is currently missing 12 members of his side to international duty.
