And the Dungannon-born star certainly didn't disappoint as he orchestrated his side to a bonus-point 28-6 victory at Kingspan Stadium.
"I couldn't really have asked for much more to be honest, we had to wait until quite late to get the bonus point but we knew if we were patient and clinical it would pay off," said Nelson.
"To get a bonus-point win in the first game of the season is massive. I haven't played at ten before so I was pretty nervous, but it went well and the boys inside and outside me were a massive help."
Stuart McCloskey, Rob Herring, Wiehahn Herbst and Luke Marshall, in the final minute, all scored tries as Ulster enjoyed a fine opening-day win against their Welsh visitors - who relied on the boot of Sam Davies for their points.
And Nelson hopes his performance has given Doak food for thought ahead of next weekend's GUINNESS PRO12 clash against Scarlets.
"Hopefully it's a good headache for him to have with a bit of versatility from myself, but I just love being out there, it was good fun," he added.
"I've been around here for a while now so I'm pretty familiar with the plays of the back three and fortunately things turned out well."
