Wales had their chances but failed to score a try when Australia were temporarily reduced to 13 men and will now face Pool B winners South Africa next Saturday while the Wallabies take on Scotland.
When you consider the injury curse that has struck Wales at this World Cup - Davies' Scarlets team-mate Liam Williams is the latest player to be ruled out for the tournament - they have done well to emerge from a Pool containing England, Australia and Fiji.
And while no team has ever won the World Cup after coming second in their pool, the scrum-half is focused on making an impression in the knockout stages.
"People called it 'the Pool of death' or whatever but we've come through it and can look forward to the quarter-finals now," said Davies.
"One of the boys mentioned it in the changing room [that no team has won the World Cup after coming second in their Pool] so that's another fact that will spur us on.
"Hopefully we can change that and go on and win this competition.
"We're going to thrive off playing South Africa. We managed to beat them in the autumn, so we'll have a look back at that game, see what went well for us and I'm sure we'll work on a few of those things this week ready for Saturday.
"They had a tough week after losing to Japan but they've been good since then, so they'll be a tough challenge. But fingers crossed we're more than capable of doing it."
