He was handed a Test debut that summer before leading Glasgow to the GUINNESS PRO12 title last season and starting four games for Scotland at this year's Rugby World Cup.
And, after signing a new three-year deal with the Warriors, Townsend is excited to see Russell get even better in the coming season.
"He is new to playing professional rugby, it is only been a year and a half," said Townsend.
"But he has quickly adapted to playing an all round game, using his strengths - his attacking and running game that he has - and also manipulating defences. He has realised that kicking can be a really positive thing for the team too.
"I look forward to working with him more and seeing him progress for us and Scotland in the coming years.
"I would imagine he was in demand elsewhere so it is good he has committed his future to us and for a substantial amount of time too.
"He brings a lot to the team. He has played very well in big games, he has a really good temperament for a challenge and he seems to rise to the occasion.
"What we are working on with him is that he plays as well as he can in every game, whether it is a PRO12 final or a home game against a team at the bottom of the league.
"What I really like about Finn is that he is a really quick learner. He has got that composure and confidence when he plays the game, but he takes in information and you see the transfer pretty quickly, a lot quicker than when I was playing in that position a number of years ago."
