But, in the end, Jones' side - who beat Sale Sharks in their competition opener the weekend before - had to settle for a losing bonus point at the Stade Pierre Antoine.
And Jones was full of praise for the effort shown by his troops in a losing cause.
"It was a big effort from the players and they gave everything they had," he said.
"It ebbed and flowed and anybody could have won that in the end and perhaps Castres had a little bit too much advantage from the first half against the wind.
"We scored some really good tries and put a lot of pressure on them and we were unlucky several times not to score more but that's the way it is."
