However, the majority of his 23 starts for Ireland have been in the second row and he looks likely to be a successor to Paul O'Connell in the five jersey for the Men in Green.
And as he is set to make his first GUINNESS PRO12 start of the season on Friday night in the second row as Ulster travel to Leinster, Henderson is not prepared to nail down a specific spot just yet.
"I am still happy playing wherever," Henderson told The Belfast Newsletter. "Various players can play a number of positions. I can cover back row and second. Robbie Diack is the same. Roger Wilson can cover at six and eight.
"We have a load of different combinations and we train with those all the time so that everyone is just comfortable, because you never know in a game what can happen.
"We saw Rob Herring coming on in the back row from the bench last weekend and of course he made his Ireland debut at hooker.
"It is beneficial to be able to move around. It improves your all-round game as well and your understanding of it.
"It allows you to see different plays and patterns from your own perspective as well as others."
