For the Wales man and the Ospreys it has been a mixed bag in the league so far this term with three wins and five defeats from their eight matches so far.
And, while it is Lydiate's reputation for chop tackling that precedes him, Tandy is adamant that there is plenty more to his game than might meet the eye on first glance.
"I think he's really starting to fit in and is developing into a good Osprey," said Tandy.
"It's so great to see at the age he is and with the experience he has with Wales and the Lions, that he still wants to learn.
"That's the biggest part of it. He's desperate to wear the shirt at the Ospreys and he's desperate to get better.
"You always associate Lyds with nailing people and making 23 or 24 tackles, but there's miles more to his game. It's just a question of tapping into it and making him feel confident.
"Not only is he looking for the ball, carrying a lot and desperate to learn, he's fitted into the environment and is a great character. He's 27 and with the experience he has, he's a great fit."
