Fotuali'i scored his first RaboDirect PRO12 try of the season against Connacht in October and has captained the Ospreys in their last two matches.
Capped 14 times by Samoa, his displays during the autumn internationals in their 22-14 loss to France and the dramatic 26-19 triumph over Wales at the Millennium Stadium have also caught the eye.
And ahead of the Ospreys' Heineken Cup clash with Toulouse at the Liberty on Saturday, backs coach Gruff Rees insists he has not given up hope the region will be able to persuade Fotuali'i to extend his time in Wales.
"I would like to see him staying," Rees told This is South Wales.
"He is a world-class nine and some of the things he does defensively are sensational in terms of the way he reads the game.
"His snap decision-making and his ability to see things and do them in an instant put him a step ahead of most players I have seen."
