While James had enjoyed a successful two-year spell with Exeter Chiefs there is no place like home, and the Blues faithful have been recapturing their love for the 28-year-old this year.
That was always going to be easy to do - James is the Welsh region's top try-scorer of all-time - but it's been made all the more simple by his stunning form.
Starting with a try against Zebre in his first game back, it has snowballed from there despite the heel injury that cost him a possible place in Warren Gatland's final Rugby World Cup squad.
Most importantly his two tries last month, against Connacht and Newport Gwent Dragons, coincided with Blues' three-game GUINNESS PRO12 winning streak.
But it is not just his raw statistics that are pleasing Blues head coach Danny Wilson and Wales.
In the nail-biting 29-27 victory over league leaders Scarlets last weekend, James' running was full of venom and he has lost none of the raw speed that made him a standout during his youth.
Wales assistant coach Rob Howley was in attendance, and he was impressed with what he saw.
"Tom James played particularly well," said Howley. "When he had the ball he created opportunities and looks quite sharp."
