But having been drawn against the likes of Leicester Tigers and Toulouse, both multiple winners of the competition, Humphreys believes the RaboDirect PRO12 outfit's stars exceeded expectations amid difficult circumstances.
And with the likes of James King and Eli Walker earning a first Wales call-up, Humphreys is adamant the next generation will be all the better for their European exploits.
"It's been a positive campaign for us in many respects," Humphreys told Wales Online. "We have so many young players who have played so much of our campaign.
"Guys like James King have played week-in, week-out, for the last seven weeks now. Lloyd Peers had his first European involvement out in Toulouse, and he's been involved in large periods of each game.
"So, I think the amount of young players coming through has been really important.
"You are sometimes surprised about how well some kids do and then you see them getting selected for international squads.
"But there is only so much you can ask of them so to then turn around and be disappointed with certain aspects is wrong. You can't justify that. They have markedly exceeded our expectations."
