But a late double from Gio Aplon dashed not only Edinburgh's hopes of victory but their prospects of progressing in Europe as they lost out 34-23 to miss out on the single losing bonus-point which would have seen them through.
John Hardie and William Helu both crossed for Edinburgh in the first-half but it was the lack of concentration on the ball in the closing moments which had Solomons scratching his head.
Edinburgh now turn their attention to a GUINNESS PRO12 clash with Cardiff Blues on Saturday, although the Edinburgh head coach could not hide his frustration at their latest defeat.
"We only have ourselves to blame. We had a long and hard journey to get here, but we can't blame that," said Solomons.
"It's one of those things, we were five minutes from qualifying from the pool but we just couldn't hang on. We were ahead with ten minutes remaining and going through at the top of the ball, but they managed to win a high ball and go ahead.
"But even then, all we had to do was hold on to a losing bonus-point and with a minute to go we couldn't do that and we broke in the end.
"It was clear that the reason we are out of this competition is because we could not hold on to the ball.
"Grenoble dominated possession of the ball because we kept giving it away and that's the reason we lost that game."
