But despite a bright showing from the 23-year-old, Scotland could not break down a resolute English defence in a 15-9 defeat and will now head to Cardiff to take on Wales in the second round.
And Hogg admits his side will need to improve on the showing against the Auld Enemy last weekend - their seventh defeat in a row to England.
"We are bitterly disappointed by the defeat. We worked incredibly hard through the week on our patterns of play but unfortunately it didn't come off for us," Hogg said.
"Obviously, getting a win first-up would do wonders for everybody. Unfortunately, that's not the case, but we will knuckle down and work hard and see what happens next week.
"The boys are bitterly disappointed but we can't dwell on it too much," he added.
"We'll review this game and see what we can do. Hopefully on Saturday we'll get the win."
Scotland did have one huge chance in the second half, Hogg's Warriors teammate Finn Russell with the interception in his own 22 but instead of passing to Hogg on his outside, the fly-half kicked the ball into touch and the chance was gone.
"I was calling for it," added Hogg.
"He apologised straightaway, as soon as he kicked it. On another day we would have scored that, but it's these little margins that are the difference between winning and losing a game.
"I'd have backed myself to score a try but there was a long way to go."
