Recently, school teacher Mrs Powell wrote to the community with the following after a great day at Rodney:
A fun day was had by all when Y4 from High Cross Primary, Newport recently visited Rodney Parade on the Second Half Project 'out of school' learning experience.
It started with a workshop from ABC Electrification. During this workshop the children not only saw how trains had developed over the last 100 or so years but also how much faster, cleaner and more state of the art the electrification of the railway line will be in the future.
The children completed the activities with great enthusiasm and were taught about the serious dangers of playing and going near railways without an adult being present. Carol van den Berg from ABC was delighted by the impact of the workshop and the pupils loved receiving her goodies.
This was followed by a fun filled skills session with Community Manager, Mike Sage who really put the children through their paces. The final part was a "Shrek" penalty pass/shoot-out and with it all level between the two teams it was down to the staff to win it for the teams! Mrs Mayor was the star of the show and successfully secured the final winning point!
After lunch the children had a fantastic time meeting Matthew Pewtner. The quality of the questions and answers were superb and the children gathered lots of valuable information and ideas about what life is like being a professional sportsman. This was enhanced by a visit from Rodney the Dragon.
To round the day off the changing room experience and tour was enjoyed by all, in fact the kids had a wail of a time and are still buzzing about it in school.
Thanks to all at the Dragons for an excellent day. The children and staff learnt so much. We are now looking to coming down as your community guests for a PRO12 match where we can see all of the players in action.
