But while the next big international target will be this summer's tour of South Africa, Schmidt insists there is still plenty to keep track of on the domestic scene.
Next Saturday's clash between Connacht and Leinster is the first of at least five interpro derbies before the end of the GUINNESS PRO12 season, with more possibly cropping up in the play-offs.
And Ireland's head coach believes it will be a great chance to watch some of the country's best test themselves again.
"The derby games have a real edge to them and when you match up who is going to be playing, that Connacht-Leinster next week is going to be a humdinger," Schmidt told the Irish Times.
"I'm looking forward to the game. In the midfield you may well have a Robbie Henshaw and a Garry Ringrose in amongst a Ben Te'o and a Bundee Aki potentially. And you may well see a Matt Healy come up against a Dave Kearney."
