And with only 12 points separating the top six, and games with all three of the other Welsh regions still to come, Owens believes the title will be decided on the last weekend of the season.
Owens was part of Wales' Six Nations campaign but is expected to return to the Scarlets squad for the west Wales derby at Ospreys on Saturday.
Owens told Scarlets' website: "Last year felt pretty tough; we were fighting for that sixth spot. There are different pressures and different competitiveness for us this year but one we're looking forward to as a squad.
"It's nice to be fighting for a place in the play-offs. We have got five very difficult games still to play.
"That's what's made the league more competitive. There are teams playing for play-offs, teams trying to qualify for Europe, and I still think it will come down to the last weekend.
"I think it's up there with one of the most competitive seasons."
