Initially, he had planned to return for his club's final league games but that may be put back to Wales' summer tour of New Zealand.
"My initial desire was to feature in the last few games of the season for the Ospreys," he told Wales Online.
"I have got to be fit. I have just got to focus on getting fit. I am not where I want to be from a physical point of view.
"I don't know when I will be able to play again. There is a bit of hope, but you would need to speak to the medical staff about the time-scales involved."
The Welsh side sit ninth, four points behind Edinburgh in sixth, with two games left in the Guinness PRO12 campaign.
They face Cardiff Blues in Judgement Day IV on Saturday before welcoming Ulster to the Liberty Stadium but are likely to need other results to go their way if they're to qualify for the European Champions Cup.
Jones said: "There's a mathematical chance that if we do well enough and a couple of other people don't do certain things that we could sneak into that sixth spot for the Champions Cup.
"The frustrating thing for me was, yes we had a lot of injuries, yes we had the World Cup, and they are definite factors, but they are also convenient excuses.
"We got into a good position pre-Christmas and just after. The frustrating part for me is we have got talented youngsters and we know we could do better.
"I haven't featured much in the latter part of the season, which is frustrating for me."
