Ryan, now an analyst for Sky Sports, will scrutinise matters at Rodney Parade and offer advice to help drive the region forward.
And Edwards believes that former Bristol and Gloucester Rugby head coach Ryan will help the Dragons progress to the next level as they look to rise up the RaboDirect PRO12 standings.
"It's an excellent appointment," 38-year-old Edwards told the South Wales Argus. "Dean won't be coaching but he will be an invaluable resource for me.
"It's nice talking to somebody who has dealt with many of the things I am experiencing now.
"Dean has no interest in putting his boots back on but will be looking at how our region operates through fresh eyes.
"We are serious about what we want to achieve here - we've turned things around financially and now we need to turn it around with everything we do as a region.
"I have no doubt that Dean coming in will permeate through and there will be a reaction at all levels whether it's the board, coaches or players."
