And having been part of the Welsh squad that travelled to Australia in the summer, Williams is determined to keep his place and push current first choice Mike Phillips all the way for the nine jersey in the autumn internationals.
He told Wales Online: "This season is a different challenge for me and one I am enjoying.
"I have more experience now and when we have had senior players missing this season, it has been time for me to step up. That is natural for my position because as a scrum-half, you need to demand what you want of your other players on the field.
"I am happy with my form. I have had a run of games since Treviso and I am confident with the way I am playing.
"I am pushing hard towards getting in that autumn international squad.
"If you are playing well for your region they can't leave you out of the Wales squad.
"Mike was first-choice in Australia in the summer and rightly so because he was playing well.
"But I would like to think if Mike was not available I would be able to step into his shoes.
"If I was called upon, I would expect to be ready. I am a different player to Mike and bring alternative things to the table.
"Although I was young coming into the Welsh squad, I was never ever happy being second choice. I want to be first pick in anything I do because I am a very competitive guy.
"So I am hungry to try and be first choice this season."
