In late September he suffered a shoulder injury and has been sidelined since - but now that he's back to full fitness, he's relishing the chance to make his mark in the LV= Cup against their Premiership opposition.
"I had a decent run of games and felt I was playing well and then the injury happened but you have to take the rough with the smooth," said Patchell.
"The LV has a reputation for bringing through youngsters and we have a young team anyway. Last year was my first taste of professional rugby in the competition and it is certainly one I enjoy playing in.
It was massive and it was my chance to make a name for myself.
"It is great to focus on a new competition. Wasps are a good team with a lot of very talented youngsters such as Elliot Daly, but they will come down focused on trying get a win."
Patchell has made his appearances for the Blues in a variety of different positions, making his RaboDirect PRO12 debut at full-back and wearing the No.12 jersey in pre-season.
But he's adamant his preferred position is at fly-half and welcomes the competition provided by Ceri Sweeney, Jason Tovey and Gareth Davies.
"I just enjoy being on the field. I made my league debut off the bench at full-back and I played a bit at 12 in pre-season but ten is where I would like to come through," he added.
"There are four really good guys at the Blues who are gunning for that position. There's Ceri Sweeney, Jason Tovey, Gareth Davies and I'm there as well but it is all horses for courses and everyone thinks they deserve to start.
"Anyone would back themselves to make an impact when they have that shirt on their back and this weekend we know that Wasps will be fired up."
