A day after first-choice Wales No. 10 Rhys Priestland picked up an Achilles injury that will keep him out of the Six Nations last weekend Patchell starred in the Blues' 35-24 defeat against Montpellier.
With five RaboDirect PRO12 appearances to his name this term the 19-year-old has caught the eye not just with his skills with the boot but also his versatility - the 6ft 3in rookie is also able to play at full-back.
Patchell kicked all of the Blues points against Montpellier last weekend on Heineken Cup duty and with Wales boss Warren Gatland unafraid to blood youngsters - George North and Tom Prydie are prime examples - talk has turned to international call-ups.
However the Blues No. 10 insists his concentration is solely on domestic duty for now.
"I mean I'm very young and the big focus we've got at the Blues this year is that if you play well for the Blue shirt you may get a call-up for the red shirt," he said.
"But I'm thoroughly enjoying myself at the Blues and the challenge for me is to get better and better week-on-week.
"And if in two or three years a Welsh call-up comes along, that's great.
"But for the time being I'm fully focused and I'm enjoying myself at the Blues."
