However after playing a key role in Glasgow Warriors' 1872 Cup victory at home to Edinburgh last week, scoring the game's only try ten minutes from time, Low's star looks to be back on the rise.
The 27-year-old was selected as part of the Scotland's 2012 RBS 6 Nations squad, but the man himself insists he has to concentrate on his domestic form before he can look to international honours.
"It was great to get the win against local rivals and for me it's just brilliant to be getting some starts under my belts," said Low, whose Glasgow side are currently fourth in the RaboDirect PRO12.
"It's been frustrating with the World Cup where I didn't play followed by a calf injury as soon as I got back.
"That meant I had to work my way back into the team and with people playing well I was forced to play some British and Irish Cup games before I could get a start for Glasgow.
"I'm pleased to be back involved with Glasgow, and it's always nice to get a try, but I can't look too far ahead.
"My focus has to be on my form with Glasgow and if anything else follows after that, so be it.
"If your form is good enough, you hope you will be rewarded at international level so it should take care of itself."
Glasgow have been enjoying a stunning run domestically having not lost in the RaboDirect PRO12 since September.
And Low admits it's important for Scottish rugby to have a side challenging for play-off honours, emulating the Warriors' efforts of two seasons ago.
He added: "We really need to have the Scottish clubs up there challenging, and we feel like we are playing well at the moment.
"It's going to be a huge challenge away to the Scarlets next up, but if we can continue our good run of form then we are in with a good shout of making the play-offs and hopefully we might even manage a home semi-final.
"There is still a long way to go, but we have a lot of confidence in the squad and the competition for places is really spurring us on."
