Winning a late penalty try through their power up-front capped the performance and delighted O'Connell.
"The scrum was just great today," he said.
"Going into the game we knew that so much of the match was going to depend on the scrum and we were excellent there today.
"Our boys did great and stepped right up to the mark, as we did against the Ospreys two weeks ago.
"We haven't necessarily been where we have wanted to be at times this year but today is very special for us.
"We have some great players coming through and the future looks fantastic."
