Ireland international Ronan O'Gara could only manage four penalties but Munster did record the only try of the game late on to earn a bonus point.
Even that, converted by O'Gara, was a penalty try and Schmidt admitted he was far from happy with the way Leinster picked up their sixth win of the season.
"It was an ugly derby game of rugby. It was a pretty slow motion game, there was quite good endeavour but it was difficult to play rugby," said Schmidt.
"It was a really frustrating night and it's not the way we want to play necessarily - it was a penalty fest - and we prefer to play rugby in a positive way. With the second highest crowd attendance in the league it is not the way we would have liked it.
"I've never seen a Munster-Leinster game where Leinster has won and you see a pretty deflated dressing room, where the guys feel like they are tired but they haven't really played a quality game of rugby."
