Although the kick-off was delayed by an hour after torrential rain, referee Nigel Owens felt he had no choice but to call a halt to proceedings with standing water endangering player safety.
It is the second time a Dragons v Blues match has fallen victim to the elements in the last 12 months but Edwards says that it was ultimately the correct decision.
"I'm extremely disappointed," said Edwards. "This was going to be a great night for Dragons rugby.
"You can see the spirit we've got here, we've tried so hard to get the game on. People really wanted to see a spectacle and I'm disappointed for them.
"I pushed the kick-off back as far as possible and, credit to the Blues, they accepted that. But safety does come first."
Blues coach Gareth Baber shared Edwards' disappointment but revealed he never thought the game would go ahead despite the best efforts of the Dragons' small army of volunteers.
"They've worked really hard to get the game on," he said.
"Obviously we wanted to get the game on, but we've got to be careful in these situations and there was too much water down the bottom of the pitch.
"We wanted to play and we had the boys warming up.
"But it got to a point where I was worrying about the pitch itself and the players' safety.
"We were disappointed and we were desperate to play.
"When we arrived at the ground there was a lot of standing water, but as the night progressed it dropped down.
"But there was too much of a deluge this afternoon to cope with."
