But Davies has confidence his pack can go toe to toe with the league's most intimidating eight at Musgrave Park.
Having convincingly won their opening game against Aironi, the Scarlets seemed on course for back-to-back victories when they opened up an eight-point lead against Connacht.
Ultimately they came unstuck as the Scarlets failed to capitalise on the forwards' dominance and Davies believes that comes down to his backs' reluctance to stand up and be counted.
He said: "It is just very frustrating that in a game [Connacht] in which we dominated for long parts, we did not take our chances to seal it and win relatively comfortably.
"I think the pack have fronted up very well and the set piece is going well and we are challenging the opposition set piece.
"We just have to be more cohesive as a team and the responsibility really falls onto our young backs to step up and more than anything else get their communication right.
"They are talented players but unless we communicate as a team we are not going to take the chances we are creating at the moment.
"We need to be able pick our heads up make decision and then be vocal around those decisions.
"I keep on telling my players that I would far rather they make a decision and run through with it then not make any decision and thus becoming victims of our own inability to react properly to a situation.
"The onus is on the team to pick up the communication. Our forwards are right up there with all of the teams left in the league in terms of ability wise so we just have to gel as team which will come primarily from our communication levels and taking on the responsibility for making decisions."
