Lawrie, who returned to the Scottish capital this summer after two seasons south of the border with Doncaster Knights, got the nod to start Edinburgh's RaboDirect Pro12 season-opener last week, but ended up on the wrong side of a 38-15 defeat at the hands of the Cardiff Blues.
Lawrie and co can put things right however in Saturday's clash with another Welsh outfit the Ospreys and Lawrie is convinced his time in Yorkshire will shine through as the season progresses.
"To go down to the Championship, which is a really competitive league, was exactly what I needed," he said. "It is a tough scrummaging league and you get a lot of carries.
"So for me, and my personal development, it was perfect. Now it's a case of me coming back and showing what I've learned."
And while Lawrie has made the starting XV for both of Edinburgh's matches so far this season, he admits Andrew Kelly is keeping him on his toes.
"Competition is a positive thing. We have gone toe to toe in a lot of the stuff we've done. Having someone of the quality of Andy is great," he added.
"If I perform well, I will hopefully be rewarded again. It's about getting the performance right, focusing on leading the scrum, making sure that area goes well for us, and making sure the set piece works."
