Ulster arrive at Rodney Parade for the RaboDirect PRO12 on the back of a comprehensive 32-14 defeat at the hands of Ospreys last week.
However Evans believes the scoreline from the Liberty Stadium clash doesn't tell the full story of the Irish province's display in south Wales.
And despite the Newport outfit having South African winger Tonderai Chavhanga to unleash on Ulster, No. 9 Evans won't be taking the challenge lightly.
"It's going to be a big test against Ulster because they played a lot better against the Ospreys than the score would suggest," said Evans.
"They are always strong in the contact area and with ball in hand, so we will need to match them there."
While expecting a battle on the field on Friday Evans is also enjoying a tough fight off it this year as he jousts with Joe Bedford for the starting jersey.
Of Evans' 29 appearances last year only four came from the bench whereas this year the 27-year-old has just one start to his name.
But having been hampered by a groin injury this term Evans is only too happy with the way his season is panning out.
"Last year I was getting rushed back but this season I know that I have to be on the top of my game because Joe is a quality player," added Evans.
"The coaches want you to be 100 per cent fit and I think Darren (Edwards) has learnt from past seasons when boys have been rushed back before they are ready and have not trained."
