The British & Irish Lions and Wales tight-head prop suffered an elbow injury in the Ospreys' Heineken Cup defeat to Leicester.
Jones has sustained damage to ligaments in his left elbow and specialists will decide today whether to operate on the 68-cap international.
"The news isn't great and he'll be out for a substantial period of time," said Ospreys director of coaching Scott Johnson. "It's not looking good for Wales either.
"If I was a betting man I wouldn't be putting my hard earned money on him making too many appearances in the RBS 6Nations.
"The issue's whether to operate or take a more conservative approach. He's had a scan, the decision is now in the hands of the specialists and we'll act accordingly."
Jones has made seven Magners League appearances this season and has formed part of a fearsome Ospreys front-row.
But Johnson is positive Jones will be back before the end of the season to give the Ospreys and Wales a boost.
"The fact is we'd rather it now than during the World Cup," said Johnson. "You have to look at it more positively, it's sad now but if he plays well at the World Cup all will be forgotten."
