With two rounds of European action taking place before the start of the Six Nations, Beattie was hoping for plenty of game time to try and press a claim for inclusion in one of Andy Robinson's squads, but as Glasgow have already made their one permitted change to their squad for the pool stage of the competition, Beattie will have to sit out.
"We are delighted that Johnnie Beattie is back from a long-term injury ahead of schedule but the rules of the competition are such that with one change having been made to the Glasgow squad of 38 for the European Cup during the pool stages we cannot add another player at this point," a Glasgow spokesman told the Scotsman.
Beattie is likely to line up for his designated club side Ayr who take part in the British and Irish Cup over the next two weeks.
