With a recovery time of between 10 and 12 weeks Jenkins is likely to miss Wales' Six Nations campaign.
The Blues have warned for some time that surgery on the injury was inevitable and they along with Wales have had to make the decision as to when the double-Grand Slam winner would go under the knife.
The decision means Jenkins will not feature in the Magners League until towards the end of March but the 30-year-old should be fit for the Blues' league run-in and the Rugby World Cup which will take place in New Zealand this summer.
