Despite taking part in some training this week question marks remain over Smith's fitness and if he fails to make it Robling is standing by.
However whether he eventually gets the nod or not Edwards has seen enough of the rookie's Welsh Premiership displays - with Newport - to expect big things in the years to come.
"Lewis was one of Wales' stand out players at the Junior World Championship at inside centre and that is where I see his future," said Edwards - who coached the Wales Under-20's before taking over at Rodney Parade.
"I actually see him in the mould of Ashley Smith and his distribution and defensive skills could lead to a bright future.
"Ashley keeps the flow to our game and fits the style of play that I want and I think he is a good role model for Lewis.
"It is nice to see a young player coming through and standing out in the Premiership. If he isn't needed against Glasgow then he will certainly be involved in the LV Cup."
