Ford has not featured for Edinburgh since January after an extended rest period following the Six Nations before gearing up for Scotland's World Cup campaign, where they were edged out by England and as a result failed to advance to the knock-out stages for the first time in the competition's history.
"Coming in, I'm just adding a bit more experience and trying to help out where I can," said Ford.
"It's just wee things, just trying to up the standards if that's needed in any area.
"There are a few new faces here now, but I've seen some videos of the boys playing and I think they've done well. Things have looked good in training as well, so hopefully we can take that onto the pitch."
