O'Leary was named to start against France but has had limited training time this week due to the injury and with the symptoms not improving Declan Kidney has called up Stringer.
"Tomas has had a stiff back which has not sufficiently improved over the course of the week, so we felt it was prudent to call Peter up to remain with the squad," said Ireland team manager Paul McNaughton.
"Tomas is not ruled out of the game, but we will wait and see how he progresses over the next 48 hours before making any decisions on changes to the matchday 22."
Munster will look to extend their league at the top of the Magners League table when they face Benetton Treviso on Sunday.
