Davies came in for some criticism in the build up to the RaboDirect PRO12 clash for his plan to run two separate squads over their two games in five days over Christmas.
However despite the 14 changes to the starting line-up from the side that beat the Ospreys 22-14 on Boxing Day a first-half score from Johnathan Edwards, converted by Dan Newton plus a late Aled Thomas penalty helped secure the 10-6 win.
Two penalties from Jason Tovey were the Gwent region's only scores as the Dragons struggled to cope with the fly-half's premature departure.
A knee injury forced Tovey off at the break and replacement kicker Lewis Robling endured a nightmare evening missing four kickable three-pointers as the Dragons poor season continued.
And while Robling's misfortune played a big part in the Scarlets' victory boss Davies was only to pleased to be able to defend his chopping and changing.
"It was a huge result for us that because Rodney Parade is a very difficult place to come," said Davies.
"In fairness to the Dragons they played some good stuff.
"The players were spurred on by the comments in the week. I thought it was the right thing to do to change it and it was."
