He underwent reconstructive surgery on his medial ligament and has been undertaking an extensive rehabilitation programme under the direction of Edinburgh and Scotland physiotherapist Stephen Mutch.
Taylor, a double British Lion, who won his 46th Scotland cap in the victory over Italy last March, will see sports surgeon Gordon Mackay on Tuesday for a scheduled check-up. He will not take any contact during this week's Scotland training.
Scotland coach Frank Hadden said: "Simon is in a very positive frame of mind and it will be good to have him running with the squad again. I've discussed Simon's involvement with Lynn Howells (Edinburgh's head coach) and he's also very positive about it."
Taylor said: "I'm just happy to be able to join in a bit. I'm seeing the surgeon on Tuesday so hopefully will have a clearer indication what happens next after that."
