A world champion with England in 2003, Back has been involved in coaching ever since, first with Leicester Tigers, whilst still a player, and then with Leeds Carnegie.
Last season the 43-year-old was coaching English side Rugby Lions in National League Three Midlands but on taking up a two year-contract with Edinburgh, Back insists he's up to the task of improving Edinburgh's 11th place in the RaboDirect PRO12.
And the former openside flanker cited the club's performance in the Heineken Cup last season, where they beat Toulouse to reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history, as evidence that the immediate future is bright.
"In the domestic competition we didn't probably do as well as we could have," said Back.
"But building on the tremendous performances of Edinburgh last season, Michael (Bradley) has identified key signings which will add depth and strength to the squad.
"I'm looking forward to meeting everyone anew, taking them at face value and hopefully facilitating and maximising everyone's potential and we can give a good account of ourselves this season.
"I don't want anyone to be looking in the mirror at the end of the day, the week, the year and thinking 'what if'.
"If you've given everything and you fail, difficult that it is to accept failure, you can sort of accept it.
"If we can do that we'll be strong this year and hopefully build on the successes of last season."
