Newport Gwent Dragons confirm that Ashley Smith, Martyn Thomas, Gethin Robinson and Steve Jones have each signed a further two-year contract with the region, representing the commitment to developing regional talent at Rodney Parade.
The players join twenty-eight year old Dragons back row Joe Bearman, whose contract was extended with the region earlier this year, ahead of the Rodney Parade redevelopment in 2010.
Centre Ashley Smith was raised through the Dragons age grade and academy system and remains an exciting prospect for the region. Twenty-one year old Ashley commented:
"The past five years with the region have been great for my professional rugby development; from U16s, through the academy set up and into the Dragons team.
"I'm excited to be part of the squad who will enter the stadium redevelopment and hopefully will stay with the region beyond 2010."
Experienced hooker Steve Jones joined the Dragons at the inception of regional rugby in Wales and is excited about continuing his professional career with the region. He said:
"I'm happy to sign the further contract with the region. As a player who's been around from the start, I want to be a part of the squad as we build upon what we have over the next two years.
"We're a determined group which keeps us strong when things don't always go our way. We are continually looking to improve on the field and it's excellent news that I'll remain part of that over the next two years."
The news follows the Dragons commitment to building a successful squad alongside the stadium redevelopment. Chief Executive Gethin Jenkins commented:
"The signings form part of our commitment to growing the regional team through local talent, international players and the redevelopment of the stadium. These are exciting times for the region"
Joe Bearman has also alluded to a bright future for the region. He commented:
"The future looks good. I'm proud to be part of the region and excited about my time here."
