Jim Thompson admits he is aiming to make an impression in Murrayfield's press deck during his first professional campaign with Edinburgh next season; largely because that part of the stadium is named after his grandfather, the 'voice of rugby', Bill McLaren.
Full-back Thompson - set to play a pivotal role in Scotland's 7s team in the Emirates Airlines Edinburgh 7s at the weekend (31 May - 1 June) - has agreed a two year contract with Edinburgh after progressing through Scottish Rugby's National Academy set-up.
And the 23-year-old says he is thrilled to have the chance to represent Edinburgh in a stadium that has such a strong link with his family.
Thompson said: "It is good that there is a part of the stadium named after my granddad after everything he has done for the game and it is fitting that will be my home stadium next year as well.
"My granddad is really pleased that I've signed a contract with Edinburgh and my Dad (racing commentator Derek Thompson) is also delighted as well.
"I am very pleased to be joining Edinburgh. To be honest, I wasn't expecting a contract, but I was very pleased to be offered one. Now I'm just looking forward to getting involved next season."
Thompson is following in the footsteps of his cousin, Scotland scrum half Rory Lawson, who spent three years in the black and red jersey of Edinburgh before moving south to join Gloucester.
Both honed their skills with Heriot's before stepping up to the pro-game and Lawson gave him a ringing endorsement of the set-up ahead of Thompson agreeing to become a full-time member of the squad.
He added: "Rory is really happy for me; he used to play for Edinburgh and he is delighted that I'm getting an opportunity with the team.
"He told me what a good club Edinburgh is and that it is a really good move for me."
Despite signing a professional deal, representing Edinburgh in the Magners League is not uncharted territory for Thompson who made his debut in last season's opening day loss at Leinster.
Thompson believes he learnt a great deal from his appearance as a second half replacement at the RDS and that, along with his experiences with Heriot's and Scotland's 7s team, will stand him in good stead for next term.
He said: "Even though it was for only 10 minutes at the start of the season, playing for Edinburgh in the Magners League was a good experience.
"It gave me an insight as to what level you need to be at in order to play Magners League rugby.
"Throughout the season I feel I have learned a great deal. Playing for the 7s has helped a lot; it has involved traveling around the world and playing in massive stadia like Wellington and Hong Kong in front of big crowds.
"All that has helped to develop my rugby and playing for Heriot's also helped my 15-a-side game. We had a good Cup run and only fell short in the Scottish Hydro Electric Cup Final."
National Academy head coach Steve Gemmell, who is also in charge of Scotland's 7s squad, praised the contribution of Thompson and tipped the skilful back to make an impact with Edinburgh.
Gemmell said: "I think Jim is someone who will make an impact at Edinburgh. His contract is a fitting reward for the effort he has put in over the past season.
"He has done really well. He came into the system fairly late, but he has performed really well for us on the Sevens circuit and developed his game.
"He has performed consistently well at Heriot's. He was one of their best performers at the Cup Final and he thoroughly deserves his opportunity at Edinburgh.
"I think he will work hard in order to get himself up to the fitness levels needed for the Magners League and Heineken Cup."
Thompson says he is hoping to celebrate his new deal by helping Scotland 7s enjoy a memorable tournament on home soil at the weekend.
He said: "The plan is to achieve something special at the weekend. We did fairly well at Twickenham last weekend and we made it through to the quarter finals.
"We only missed out on a semi-final place after conceding a last minute try against Fiji. So we are aiming to get out of our group and hopefully I can play as much as I can."
